Our impact

2023/2024 LEAH Learners

Learners are in more vulnerable situations and therefore require additional support.

  • 34 more learners in temporary accommodation than the year before.

  • 59 more asylum seekers compared to 2021/2022. 

  • The number of learners with physical and mental issues has doubled since 2021/2022.

Learners' family situations are more demanding with an increase of those who have children under 5 and with additional needs. Fewer of them have family support workers. 

Increase in the number of learners who are over 60 and are therefore likely to require face to face support and have fewer digital literacy skills. 

2023/2024 Learner Survey Findings

89% said lessons with LEAH had improved their listening skills. 

82% said lessons with LEAH had improved their speaking skills.

79% said lessons with LEAH had improved their reading skills.

71% said lessons with LEAH had improved their writing skills.

90% said lessons helped them feel more confident.

86% said lessons helped them feel happier and healthier.

83% said lessons helped them have more confidence online.

80% said lessons helped them feel less lonely.

The top 3 areas LEAH has helped clients in everyday life:

  1. Speaking to their GP.

  2. Making new friends.

  3. Feeling welcome in the UK.

2023/2024 LEAH Volunteers

55 volunteers speak more than one language.

35 volunteers speak English as a second language.

2023/2024 Volunteer Survey Findings

86% scored LEAH 8 and above (on a 10 point scale) when asked ‘How likely are you to recommend volunteering with LEAH to others’.

89% of volunteers felt they were either ‘very well’ or ‘well’ supported by LEAH.

77% of volunteers attended LEAH training events or get togethers.

The top 5 things volunteers have gained from volunteering:

  1. Greater awareness of the challenges facing different groups in the community.

  2. Meeting new people.

  3. Learning about a new culture, customs, or religion through their student.

  4. Learning a new skill.

  5. A greater sense of personal wellbeing.

2023/2024 LEAH Referrers

313 referrals in 2023/2024.

260 individuals from 56 organisations were referred to LEAH - 23 of which hadn’t referred to us before.

LEAH had increased referrals from:

  • Employability organisations

  • Charity and voluntary organisations

  • Local authorities

  • Educational institutes

  • Healthcare providers

2023/2024 Referrer Survey Findings

100% referrers feel it is important to be able to refer clients into LEAH’s service.

94% of professionals who referred feel that LEAH's work fills a gap in services and without LEAH vulnerable clients would not have access to ESOL support.  

The top 4 things referrers felt clients had gained from being with LEAH:

  1. Increased confidence.

  2. Improved English language skills.

  3. Sense of wellbeing.

  4. Decreased isolation.
